Ayutthaya - the Capital of Siam

Image
Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 - and today we choose to share with you -  https://www.bangkok101.com/roaming-amongst-the-ruins/   - an article within a bigger one about Ayutthaya. Original text by Bruce Scott. Ayutthaya  wa s the second capital of Thailand (when it was called Siam). But in 1767 the Burmese invaded and Ayutthaya was almost decimated and the  royal line  relocated to Bangkok. The Thai Fine Art Department began to restore Ayutthaya in 1969 and then UNESCO declared Ayutthaya a World Heritage Site. For tourists to see them all in one day transport will be needed and for the famous sites there is a small entrance fee – most sites are open from 8am to 5pm. Here is  a   selection   from  the list that they make for you; Wat Phra Si Sanphet. This was the most respected and holiest temple in Ayutthaya .   H ere are more details -  http://ayutthaya-history.com/Temples_Ruins_...

The Island of Artisans

Image
Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 - and the article today is about ‘ The Island of Artisans ’ -  “Visiting the urban oasis of Koh Kret is like taking a step back in time”  – original words by Bruce Scott. A little north of Bangkok is the island of Koh Kret. Interestingly it w as not originally an isl and but in 1722 King Taisra dug a canal so that the boats would not have to follow the meandering Chao Phraya river. This canal gradually got bigger and became a river – Lat Klet. And visiting the island you may think that this was the last time that there was modernization here. After arriving on a small ferry from Pak Kret and the lovely Buddhist Temple of Wat Sanam Nuea it is simple to rent a bicycle and cycle around the island – here’s a route -  http://bit.ly/2wNx6Nr . And it is even better because cars are not allowed on the island, although the way through the mark ets can be a little narrow. ...

Street Food and Thailand

Image
Each week we post a link to an article in Bangkok 101 - and today we are looking at a recent edition and about how popular the street-food vendors are. “Try heaving a hot egg barbecue brazier all day on a bamboo shoulder yoke, or shoving a gas-fired cauldron of soup stock across an eight-lane road.” . The skill that these street vendors show us every day makes them special! There are special spots all over Bangkok which are worth investigating but they may be in the strangest spots – under bridges, down the side of a building, on the outside corner of a Buddhist Wat and many more. The coffee man near our office building does a roaring trade as the people come off the river-taxi in the morning and is next to his friend who serves freshly cut fruit and another who serves a collection of fresh vegetables and tasty sauces. Bangkok street food is something that is commonly written about by visitors and daily eaten by the local people. There is als...
